Item description
A condition that refers to a problem with a rubbery disc ruptured between the spinal bones.
This condition occurs when the soft center of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior casing.
Some herniated discs cause no symptoms. Others can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg.
Not every disc requires intervention. Surgery may be needed if numbness or weakness persists after six weeks, with poorly controlled pain. Difficulty standing or walking and loss of bladder or bowel control may also be present. Treatment may include medications such as muscle relaxants, neuropathic drugs, NSAIDs, physiotherapy, and possibly surgery when necessary.
Can have no symptoms, but people may experience:
Pain areas: in the arm, back, foot, or leg
Muscular: muscle weakness, muscle spasms, or overactive reflexes
Sensory: leg numbness, pins and needles, or uncomfortable tingling and burning
Also common: foot numbness, hand numbness, or neck stiffness
Treatment is restricting activity, ice/heat therapy, and physiotherapy to manage symptoms
